Kathleen K. asks: What do you think of prosperity ministers who preach that God will give us whatever we ask for like he is a genie in a bottle. They say if you want a boat or a new big house just ask and it will be given to you.
Father Pete says: I believe that there is no “prosperity” message from Jesus. In fact, he teaches, “Blessed are the poor in spirit.” He also says “do not collect treasure that rust can corrode and moths devour,” rather seek treasure that is everlasting. Sure, God grants us blessings in this life. But God will only grant us that which is ultimately for our spiritual welfare. Therefore, God also allows loss in this life, and finally, death. He leads us ultimately to be attached to His will alone.
